Watch now the recording of our Intellectual Property in Open Source webinar
Open source has transformed the software development landscape, enabling collaboration and innovation on a global scale. Navigating intellectual property (IP) and licenses within the open source context presents unique challenges.
The “Intellectual Property and Licences in the Context of European Projects” webinar was organised by EUCEI’s TF2 leader (Eclipse Foundation) and it explored the relationship between IP and licenses in open source, addressing key questions such as what intellectual property is, how it applies to open source, and the impact of different licensing models.
The webinar started with a brief overview on Open Source origins, principles and freedoms. Dr. Bayton discussed best practices for managing intellectual property assets within open source projects, including attribution, copyright protection, and conflict resolution.
The talk then highlighted the legal implications of using open source software and emphasised the importance of understanding and complying with license obligations. The discussion focused on the grant of rights and requirements: permissive, weak copyleft, strong copyleft.
It also discussed the best practices for managing intellectual property assets within open source projects, including attribution, copyright protection, and conflict resolution. Additionally, the role of licenses in fostering innovation and community engagement was emphasised.
