SUMMARY:Swarm Localization and Sensing – from Classroom to Future Space Exploration Missions
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Siwei Zhang\, Institute of Communications and Navigation\, German Aerospace Center (DLR) \nAbstract: Robotic swarm is an emerging technology for rapidly sensing dynamic physical processes over large area both on Earth and in future space exploration missions. The nodes in swarm compose a self-organized radio network\, providing precise time and position references without additional infrastructures like GPS or base stations. Each node is additionally equipped with environmental sensors\, for example a photonic sensor to sense the illumination in caves beneath the lunar surface\, a hydrogen sulfide sensor to explore the volcanic activities\, or a methane sensor to track organic traces. More importantly\, the swarm has a unique capability of formation optimization. Hence\, nodes collaboratively choose their trajectories\, so that the spatial-temporal information is gathered most efficiently. \nAt the German Aerospace Center (DLR)\, we design compact and portable nodes with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for decentralized timing\, position and environmental sensing. These nodes can be easily carried or deployed by robots and are thus suitable for technology demonstrations in space-analog missions. These nodes are also served as educational platforms\, assisting high school through doctoral students to gain intuitions and in-depth knowledge in signal processing for communications\, localization\, decentralized estimation\, sensor fusion\, etc. \nIn this webinar\,  Dr. Zhang will start with the fundamentals of swarm localization and sensing\, then present the building steps of a swarm system\, and finally showcase the usage of the swarm in DLR’s space-analog missions\, for example on volcanos and in lava caves. \nRegister here \n\n\n

SUMMARY:CEC Workshop 2024
DESCRIPTION:Location: Charleroi\, Belgium\nDates: October 28th\, 2024 \nOVERVIEW \nThe Cloud-Edge Continuum is a new hyper-distributed computing paradigm that aims at seamlessly interconnecting and abstracting the computing power and storage capacity of the Cloud with the data processing capabilities of edge devices\, IoT devices\, and sensors. Intelligently balancing tasks in a continuum enables faster response times\, lower latency\, and more efficient use of network bandwidth. However\, efficiently managing extremely heterogeneous Cloud and Edge resources is a pressing concern in real-world large-scale implementations. Such heterogeneity refers to differences in network capabilities\, processing power\, software stack\, APIs\, and security protocols across the Cloud-Edge Continuum infrastructure. This raises significant challenges for the network community to develop new and efficient protocols and communication services. Given the potential benefits of the Cloud-Edge Continuum\, it is important to explore the current state-of-the-art research and identify the challenges and opportunities in this area. \nThe Cloud-Edge Continuum (CEC) workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to discuss the latest research\, trends\, and challenges in ecosystems and environments based on Cloud-Edge Continuum paradigm. The primary goal of this workshop is to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas among researchers and stakeholders. The workshop can provide a platform for participants to share their experiences\, best practices\, case studies\, and to identify emerging research areas and potential solutions to existing challenges. By bringing together experts from different domains\, the CEC workshop also aims to provide insights into how Cloud-Edge Continuum can be applied in various fields\, such as healthcare\, transportation\, smart cities\, and manufacturing. \nTOPICS (not limited to) \nWe welcome submissions of original research\, work-in-progress\, and proof of concepts describing original ideas and presenting new directions. We invite submissions covering the aspects around the design\, development\, and evaluation of architectures\, technologies\, and applications for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\, including but not limited to: \n\nNetwork optimization and interoperable protocols for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNovel system architectures and hardware designs in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNetwork security\, data privacy\, confidence\, and trust in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nServerless services and models for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nMobile computing and distributed autonomy in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nFederated learning\, and swarm intelligence in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nML\, LLM\, and GenAI based requirement gathering and resource allocation in Cloud-Edge Continuum\nQoS provisioning\, QoE\, and SLA management in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nSustainable\, energy and carbon efficient connectivity in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNext generation smart use-cases enabled by the Cloud-Edge Continuum\n\n\n\n
