SUMMARY:European Convergence Summit 2024
DESCRIPTION:The European Convergence Summit (ECS) 2024 will be organised by the Adra-e project on 19 June 2024. \nThe ECS is a high-level event that aims to bring together influential figures from various backgrounds to support co-programming of the Artificial Intelligence Data and Robotics (ADR) partnership\, define orientations for ADR research and innovation in Europe with respect to socioeconomic issues\, and build a consensus among stakeholders. The overarching theme of the event will be the impact of ADR on energy/CO2 reduction. \nThe event will be organised in three main blocks.\nBlock 1: European Strategies in ADR\nThe first block of the summit will focus on Europe’s current position in the ADR industry compared to the worldwide landscape. Speakers and panellists will discuss the increasing competition among the leading countries\, and why AI\, data\, and robotics are essential in the European Union\, with a growing demand for intelligent systems across industries. \nBlock 2: ADR and Environmental Issues\nThe second block of the summit will focus on the paradoxical situation that arises when we think about ADR technology and the environment. Experts will discuss the role played by ADR in environmental sustainability\, especially when considering the high energy consumption that is required to run these technologies\, as well as the battle being waged against climate change and how technology could play an important role in reducing carbon emissions. \nBlock 3: Public Involvement and Normative Issues\nThe third block of the summit will focus on public involvement and normative issues. Discussions will revolve around the need for legal\, ethical\, and regulatory measures for ADR technology to ensure its ethical use and prevent misuse. The socio-economic impact of ADR technology will also be discussed\, including its potential impact on the job market\, especially for low-skilled workers\, the need for social investments and retraining programs to upskill the workforce and reduce the risk of increased inequalities. \nThe event will be held online. To access the event please register here and you will get the link to join the event in the upcoming weeks.

SUMMARY:International Conference on Engineering\, Technology and Innovation--30th Edition
DESCRIPTION:ICE is the International Conference on Engineering\, Technology\, and Innovation. It developed from an early focus on the engineering method of concurrent engineering\, to general organisation of the engineering process and its organisation within the corporation and in networks. Concurrency obviously addresses parallelisation of activities in time\, but it comes with the broadening of decision making on what is wanted and how services and products ought to be. This is not decided by technical criteria alone\, but includes usability\, economic\, environmental\, and social criteria. The ICE conference therefore discusses systems engineering as a socio-technical task with a focus on design of products and services\, and the entrepreneurial innovation process for its adoption in society and economy. \nThe 30th ICE IEEE/ITMC Conference (ICE 2024) will be hosted by UNINOVA in Madeira Island\, Portugal\, being part of the Madeira Digital Transformation Week. For this upcoming event we would like to signal to our growing community of researchers\, innovators\, industrialists and engineers to share their insights (practitioner\, industrial and academic)\, practices\, projects and case studies that address the conference theme\, “Digital Transformation on Engineering\, Technology and Innovation.” \nLearn more

SUMMARY:1st Open-Source RISC-V Software Workshop
DESCRIPTION:History teaches us that any new hardware without good and widely-used software on top has no future. Countless examples exist even from the biggest manufacturers (e.g. Intel Itanium\, IBM Cell\, …) without even considering competition (e.g Sun Microsystems’s Ultrasparcs\, Digital’s Alphas\, HP’s …). Regardless of the nostalgia and to ensure RISC-V is successful beyond small controllers\, software and -specially- widely used software suites require the focus now to avoid repeating the errors of the past. \nThis workshop is born to bring together all the researchers and developers in the open-source software arena to showcase their developments and establish collaborations. This community can provide efficiently and effectively the necessary software in the different application areas where RISC-V can be deployed. \nThis workshop focuses on software. From hardware simulators/emulators\, through OSes/toolchains\, to applications and software stacks. A special focus will be devoted to open-source and collaborative projects. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers:\nRamon Canal\, Beatriz Otero (UPC)\nStefano Di Carlo (POLITO)\nManolis Marazakis (FORTH) \nProgram Committee:\nDimitris Gizopoulos (UoA)\nJuan José Costa (UPC)\nAaron Call (BSC)\nManolis Marazakis (FORTH) \nLearn more

SUMMARY:Towards deployment of Cloud-Edge-IoT solutions across the computing continuum from market pathways to large scale pilots
DESCRIPTION:Purpose & Scope of the Event:\nTo realise the green and digital transition\, Europe needs to step up its investments in IoT and connectivity\, facilitate data access and data services across key industrial sectors like automotive\, energy\, buildings\, agriculture etc.\, in particular invest in energy-efficient edge nodes and increase the capacity of its data infrastructure at cloud and at edge level. IoT and edge computing will play a significant role in the future of our businesses\, economy and society\, especially while keeping data at the edge and taking decisions at a local level. This gives us an advantage in global emergencies like the energy crisis\, or natural disasters caused by climate change. Creating this CEI environment—a computing continuum of data collection\, storage and processing from edge to cloud—will be an essential component of a globally competitive\, secure and dynamic data-agile economy in Europe. Europe has the opportunity to shape this technological paradigm and creates its role as a key player in the worldwide CEI ecosystem and further progress towards digital autonomy and economic resiliency. \nTo seize the opportunity\, it is crucial to tackle central open points for the edge paradigm shift. While\, on one hand\, collaborative work is needed in terms of a common CEI reference architecture\, identification of relevant open-source building blocks and common use of an edge taxonomy\, there is also the crucial need to fully understand the needs and requirements of European industrial adopters\, the evolution of a European CEI ecosystem and industrial market trends to ensure the alignment of technological solutions with the economic opportunities. The formation of an integrated European CEI value chain where there is an established dialogue among the key stakeholders (technology providers\, infrastructure providers\, system integrators\, end-users\, etc.) is an important step to facilitate this edge paradigm shift. This should be aligned with advancements in Europe in terms of design principles for Data Spaces\, legal data frameworks such as AI act\, Digital Governance Act and/or the Data act\, and strategic initiatives such as Chips JU (including KDT and EPOSS). \nThe event dove into sectoral applications and use cases which have been showcased by industrial partners in the CEI cluster\, highlight industrial success stories originated from the Meta-OS projects\, which are well embedded into the final project results\, the value chain analysis behind key edge application and services and impact assessment made\, which is impactful and synergistic efforts as well as the success stories of Meta-OS projects paving the way towards Large scale pilots supported under the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2024. The event is an ancillary initiative to the AIOTI days on 24th and 25th September 2024. \nWho attended?\nCloud\, Edge\, IoT Experts\, Companies\, SMEs and other industry players involved either in the Cloud\, Edge\, IoT domains or related topics including but not limited to Artificial Intelligence\, Interoperability\, ICT security\, connectivity\, open source and ICT standardisation\, Research Projects involved in ICT\, Meta-Operating Systems\, Cognitive Cloud\, Swarm Computing\, Software Research and more. \nMain pointers for the Target Audience /Participants \n\nListen to Policy Makers/ Funding Agencies & their priorities and expectations towards delivering the European Strategy for data and leading computing technologies;\nLearn about Market dynamics and pathways for CEI in Europe;\nGain insights from EU strategic initiatives on data and computing technologies in the coming years;\nDiscover industrial best practices /use cases who are working on gaps in the main industrial sectors and where European companies are playing a significant role;\nShowcase success stories of Meta-OS use-cases\n\nBe sure to join us (limited seats available)! \nAgenda \nThe agenda is structured as follows: \n13:30 – 14:00 Registration & Networking coffee (slides here)\n \n14:00- 14:15 High-Level policy Welcome\, Rolf Riemenschneider\, EC DG Connect (slides here)\n \n14:15- 14:30 UNLOCK-CEI overview and its role in the EUCEI ecosystem\, Golboo Pourabdollahian\, IDC (slides here)\n \nSession 1: Results and impact demand side  \n\n14:30 – 14:40 CEI Industry insights and market trends\, John Gole\, IDC (slides here)\n\n14:40 – 14:50 CEI Market pathways and insights\, Mark Dietrich\,  EGI Foundation (slides here)\n\n14:50 – 15:00 CEI Value chain dynamics\, Inessa Seifert\, VDI (slides here)\n\n15:00 – 15:30 Panel discussion: Reflections on Market insights and industrial practices\nPanellists: \nEusebiu Catana\, ERTICO\nMark Dietrich\, EGI Foundation\nJohn Gole\, IDC\nBernhard Peischl\, AVL\nInessa Seifert\, VDI\nModerator: Maria Giuffrida\, Trust-IT Services\n\n15:30 – 16:00 Networking break  \nSession 2: Supply-demand dialogue  \n\n16:00 – 16:10 MetaOS ecosystem overview and engagement actions\, Tanya Suarez\, BluSpecs (slides here)\n\n16:10 –  16:40 Presentation of MetaOS success stories (slides here)\n\nDimitrios Christopoulos\, NEMO Project \nMichal Klosinski\, NeboulOuS Project\nMarcin Kotliński\, ICOS Project\nNacho Lacalle\, aerOS Project\nAlbert Seubers\, FluidOS Project\nTasos Zafeiropoulos\, NEPHELE Project\n\n16:40 – 17:10 Panel discussion with MetaOS projects and industrial speakers\nPanellists: \nNatalie Samovich\, Enercoutim\nAtif Syed\, Wootzano\nModerator: Tanya Suarez\, BluSpecs\n\nSession 3: UNLOCK-CEI collaborative efforts and legacy  \n\n17:10 – 17:50 Panel discussion: Joint efforts of EU strategic initiatives: Synergies and way forward\nKoen De Bosschere\, HiPEAC\nHuascar Espinoza\, Chips JU\nSrđan Krčo\, AIOTI\nAna Garcia Robles\, BDVA\nPhilip Piatkiewicz\, ADRA\nModerator: Golboo Pourabdollahian\, IDC\n\n17:50 – 18:10 EU-CEI Large scale pilots\nPresentation of O-CEI\, Ignacio Lacalle\, Universitat Politècnica de València\n \n18: 10 – 18:20  The continuation of EU-CloudEdgeIoT (slides here) \n18:20- 18:30 Final Takeaways  \n18:30  – 19:30 Networking cocktail and welcome to AIOTI days  \n\n\nGo to the event page

SUMMARY:Swarm Localization and Sensing – from Classroom to Future Space Exploration Missions
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Siwei Zhang\, Institute of Communications and Navigation\, German Aerospace Center (DLR) \nAbstract: Robotic swarm is an emerging technology for rapidly sensing dynamic physical processes over large area both on Earth and in future space exploration missions. The nodes in swarm compose a self-organized radio network\, providing precise time and position references without additional infrastructures like GPS or base stations. Each node is additionally equipped with environmental sensors\, for example a photonic sensor to sense the illumination in caves beneath the lunar surface\, a hydrogen sulfide sensor to explore the volcanic activities\, or a methane sensor to track organic traces. More importantly\, the swarm has a unique capability of formation optimization. Hence\, nodes collaboratively choose their trajectories\, so that the spatial-temporal information is gathered most efficiently. \nAt the German Aerospace Center (DLR)\, we design compact and portable nodes with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for decentralized timing\, position and environmental sensing. These nodes can be easily carried or deployed by robots and are thus suitable for technology demonstrations in space-analog missions. These nodes are also served as educational platforms\, assisting high school through doctoral students to gain intuitions and in-depth knowledge in signal processing for communications\, localization\, decentralized estimation\, sensor fusion\, etc. \nIn this webinar\,  Dr. Zhang will start with the fundamentals of swarm localization and sensing\, then present the building steps of a swarm system\, and finally showcase the usage of the swarm in DLR’s space-analog missions\, for example on volcanos and in lava caves. \nRegister here \n\n\n
