SUMMARY:HiPEAC 2024 Conference
DESCRIPTION:The HiPEAC conference took  place in Munich\, Germany from 17 to 19 January 2024. The conference was organised by HiPEAC\, a project managed by HaDEA\, and consisted of parallel workshops\, tutorials\, special sessions\, and an industry exhibition.\nSeveral Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects participated: \n18 January \n\n10:00 – CODECO organises an all-day workshop on ‘Flexible and Adaptive Edge to Cloud Orchestration’ and ‘CODECO and its Components: Hands-On’.\nThe project COGNIFOG is joining the workshop with a presentation on Edge-Cloud orchestration.\n\n19 January \n\n10.00 – VEDLiOT (renamed DL4IoT) organises the session ‘DL4IoT: Deep Learning for IoT’.\nASSIST-IoT will participate in the workshop presenting its deliverables.\n14.00 – AERO will host a workshop on ‘Computing Continuum of Cloud\, Edge\, and IoT Technologies’.\nAs a clustering event\, Vitamin-V\, OpenCUBE\, and Riser will present their objectives and expected deliverables at the workshop.\n\nThe projects\n\nHiPEAC is a European network of almost 2 000 world-class computing systems researchers\, industry representatives\, and students\, comprising actors and stakeholders in the field of cyber-physical systems (CPSoS). It provides a platform for cross-disciplinary research collaboration.\nAERO aims to complement the efforts of the EPI project by developing the open-source software ecosystem required to not only improve the efficiency of the EPI hardware but also accelerate and ease the processor’s integration into the cloud.\nASSIST-IoT is developing an open\, decentralised reference architecture\, associated enablers\, services and tools to assists human-centric applications in multiple verticals. The proposed solution integrates AI-based functions transferring intelligence closer to the edge (data sources)\, including devices.\nCOGNIFOG is building a cognitive fog framework to tackle the challenge of limited network capacities due to data generation. By analysing data at the periphery of the network\, closer to the data source or computing devices\, network traffic will be reduced\, thereby leading to more energy-efficient IT systems with lower latency.\nCODECO is working to achieve a smoother and more flexible support of services across the Edge-Cloud continuum by creating a novel\, cognitive Edge-Cloud management framework. It is developing an ecosystem of open-source toolkits\, large-scale experimentation\, training tools and events\, use-cases across four vertical domains (Smart Cities\, Energy\, Manufacturing\, Smart Buildings).\nDECICE is addressing challenges in the rapidly expanding cloud computing industry. Focused on Smart Cities\, industrial automation\, and data analytics\, it unifies diverse systems into centrally controlled compute clusters. With a specific focus on dynamic scheduling in distributed environments\, DECICE introduces an AI-SCHEDULER for energy-efficient compute orchestration. The project emphasizes increased control through an API and aims to showcase usability and benefits through real-life use cases.\nOpenCUBE is setting out a full-stack solution of a validated European Cloud computing blueprint to be deployed on European hardware infrastructure. The project will provide a unified software stack that captures the different best practices and open-source tooling on the operating system\, middleware\, and system management level.\nRISER is developing the first all-European RISC-V cloud server infrastructure\, significantly enhancing Europe’s open strategic autonomy. The project is working on open-source designs for standardised form-factor system platforms that will be suitable for supporting cloud services and deploying cloud applications.\nVitamin-V is deploying a complete RISC-V hardware-software stack for cloud services based on innovative cloud open-source technologies for RISC-V cores with a special focus on European Processor Initiative cores. It incorporates an innovative RISC-V virtual execution environment providing hardware emulation and simulation.

SUMMARY:International Workshop on the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum for Hyper-Distributed Applications and Services (CEICO)
DESCRIPTION:International Workshop on the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum for Hyper-Distributed Applications and Services (CEICO)\nCo-located with the 16th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing (UCC 2023)\, 4-7 December\, Taormina\, Italy \nThe advent of the Cloud-Edge-IoT computing paradigm is revolutionizing the provisioning of hyper-distributed applications leveraging ecosystems of smart and highly heterogeneous Internet of Things (IoT) devices (e.g.\, sensors\, robots\, cameras). Unprecedented services are expected to be provided based on the pervasive interaction with and between smart things in a Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum. Robotics\, healthcare\, logistics\, and energy management\, among others\, are use-case domains that will strongly benefit from this paradigm. However\, an inherent need for novel architectural approaches\, able to support by design a full convergence and integration among existing and evolving IoT and edge computing technologies into the continuum is strongly felt. Efficient management of extremely heterogeneous Cloud\, Edge and IoT resources is a high concern in real-world implementations. In parallel\, data processing and analytics are foreseen to rapidly shift towards edge computing facilities to foster data locality. To efficiently manage data management and analysis over such distributed environments\, novel hyper-distributed applications are even more embracing microservices-based and cloud-native computing technologies\, while distributed computing principles are deeply evolving their lifecycle orchestration paradigms to efficiently exploit resources in the continuum. \nThe aim of this workshop is to offer researchers and practitioners from academia and industry\, in the related areas of Cloud\, Edge\, Fog\, Big Data\, Grid\, and Cluster Computing communities\, a venue on the recent advances in ecosystems and environments based on the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum paradigm. Submitted papers are expected to focus on the recent advances in theory\, application\, standardization\, and implementation in the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum domain. \nTopics of interest for this workshop are (but not limited to): \n\nClouds federation and interoperability\nCloud-Edge-IoT programming\nCloud-Edge-IoT computing standards\nCloud-Edge-IoT Orchestration and Automation\nCloud and Fog robotics in the continuum\nEnergy efficiency in Cloud-Edge-IoT\nCloud-Edge-IoT middleware\nAI-assisted solutions for the Cloud continuum\nFederated learning and AI models in the continuum\nCloud-Edge-IoT security\nSemantic models for the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum\nIntent-based orchestration\nTime-Sensitive Networking (TSN) for the continuum\nSDN and NFV in beyond 5G networks\nSelf-organising and self-healing solutions for 5G and 6G networks\nTestbed development and real-world deployment in the continuum\nOther topics related to the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum are welcome as well\n\nOur community member\, NEPHELE project\, participates to the workshop.

SUMMARY:Giving Energy an Edge: Showcasing the Edge to Cloud Continuum in Energy
DESCRIPTION:Giving Energy an Edge: Showcasing the Edge to Cloud Continuum in Energy\nThe Energy Infoday that took place on Friday 10th November\, 2023\, at 10:00 (CET)\, brought together over 100 attendees\, including industry experts\, innovators\, researchers\, developers\, SMEs\, start-ups and energy company stakeholders to discuss the latest trends and technologies shaping the future of energy and innovations of the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum in Energy sector. We are very thankful for every participant and want to express our special gratitude to all speakers\, panellists\, open calls and use case representatives for their diverse input as well as adding depth to the conversations that followed. \nThe Infoday kicked off by exploring the general landscape of SME innovation in the Grid Edge sector\, spotlighting the EU CEI MetaOS projects. This broad view was further complimented by a presentation showcasing a panoramic view of various European project clusters working on transforming and digitising the energy sector. \nAfter a first overview of the current state of innovation\, those inputs were reflected and augmented by gathering valuable inputs on the current transition challenges on topics such as energy infrastructure\, adaptability\, and electrification of heat and mobility. During a panel discussion\, they were critically analysed from an overarching\, institutional and energy distributor perspective\, which was shared as well as contrasted by the point of view of energy start-ups.  \nShifting from general to more specific topics over time\, the event gave the floor to a section where various EU CEI-funded research and innovation projects got the opportunity to first pitch their current open call opportunities. The goal was to spark interest and active involvement from SMEs\, start-ups\, and developers in the EU Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum. Following this was a narrative showcase of seven different energy use cases ranging from smart cities\, mobility\, and grid flexibility to windmill maintenance. \nWrapping up the Infoday\, attendees engaged in network opportunities with the projects in interactive breakout sessions to collect more input on the technical aspects of the projects\, gather advice on the open call process or interact with additional projects in a demo room discussing their current progress in the establishment and development of energy use cases. \nThe main takeaways from the Energy Infoday were the following: \n\nInsights into the most transformative use cases at the crossroads of energy and Cloud-Edge-IoT computing.\nExploration of funding and support opportunities for diverse energy projects and engagement in open call applications.\nConnections with key stakeholders in the European tech ecosystem.\nLearnings on how emerging edge technologies can benefit businesses and an understanding of the opportunities for transitioning to a CEI approach.\nExploration of potential energy-centred applications and development of new products and services.\nIdentification of partners\, customers\, and alternative architectures within the Cloud Continuum in energy.\n\nAgenda\n(Download full slide deck) \n10:00 Welcome \n• Brendan Rowan\, BluSpecs\, UNLOCK-CEI \n10:05 MetaOS – An opportunity for SMEs in the Grid Edge\n \n• Rolf Riemenschneider\, Head of Sector IoT\, EC – DG CNECT \n10:30 Energy sector transformation through digital integration; a meta analysis of key use cases from European R&I \n• Natalie Samovich\, Chair AIOTI WG Energy\, Enercoutim \n10:45 Powering the future; tech transformation of the energy sector in full transition \n• Selene Liverani\, Senior Technology and Projects Advisor\, E.DSO – European Distribution System Operators\n• Valerie Anne Lencznar\, Senior Advisor at RTE and Ambassador for Europe\, Global Smart Energy Federation\n• Dieter Jong\, Sales Lead\, Finance\, HR & Legal at re.alto energy\n• Nicolas Höning\, Co-Founder at SEITA\n• Tanya Suárez (Moderating)\, BluSpecs\, UNLOCK-CEI \n11:30 Open Calls Opportunities \n• Ignacio Lacalle Úbeda\, Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV)\, aerOS\n• Elena Japundžić\, FundingBox\, ICOS\n• Dimitrios Skias\, INTRA\, NEMO\n• Anastasios Zafeiropoulos\, National Technical University of Athens\, NEPHELE\n• Ana Luísa Alves\, F6S\, NebulOuS \n11:40 MetaOS Energy use cases \nNarrative presentation \n• Energy Efficient\, Health Safe & Sustainable Smart Buildings (aerOS)\no The use case will demonstrate gains of the aerOS architecture in an edge deployment for energy efficient\, sustainable\, flexible and health-safe smart buildings.\no Speaker: Fotini Setaki\, COSMOTE\n• Containerised Edge Computing Near Renewable Energy Sources (aerOS)\no The use case will allow management of containerised edge data centres developed by CF and located directly at energy sources\, connected to the smart infrastructure and providing cloud continuity.\no Speaker: Marcin Michel\, ELECTRUM\n• Energy Management and Decision Support System (EMDS) (ICOS)\no This use case supports the planned enablement of domestic services to support the distribution network which will further drive uptake in smart\, controllable domestic devices as well as leverage payments for flexible energy usage.\no Speaker: Rosalia Davi\, SSE Airtricity\n• Smart Mobility (NEMO)\no This use case will utilize basic geography\, street-level\, public transportation\, weather and noise data\, along with historical data and analysis of CCTV/traffic cameras to model and train distributed AI models on traffic flow and parking prediction in a greedy layer wise fashion.\no Speaker: Francesco Bellesini\, EMOTION\n• Smart Grid Flexibility (NEMO)\no This use case will utilise innovative high-tech power sensors which realise advanced protection for MV/LV substation breakers and smart meters in RES\, buildings and offices to measure and balance electricity generation/consumption.\no Speaker: Prashanth Kumar Pedholla\, ASM\n• Energy Management in Smart Buildings/Cities (NEPHELE)\no This use case will use smart applications and services leveraging on the VOStack which can help to manage control actions of building equipment\, providing user with customized services for energy-efficient\, well-being and comfort.\no Speaker: Raphael Marin Perez\, ODINS\n• Windmill Maintenance (NebulOuS)\no This use case will validate the NebulOuS framework in deploying wind turbine inspection software in an optimal way\, making appropriate use of cloud and fog resources\, for instance through high-resolution images of wind turbine blades captured by drones\, which are processed by AI-enabled algorithms to automatically detect turbine damages and discover other valuable information for turbine maintenance.\no Speaker: Michał Kłosiński\, TTA \n12:20 Breakout Sessions \n1. SUMMARY:IEEE International Conference on Cloud Networking
DESCRIPTION:IEEE International Conference on Cloud Networking\nBeyond 5G (B5G) applications and services offer unprecedented opportunities for innovation and progress. Nonetheless\, achieving such a vision requires a new breed of intelligent mechanisms\, protocols and autonomous architectures capable of truly taking advantage of the entire edge-to-cloud computing spectrum. \nIn particular\, cross-domain scenarios\, which include multi-cloud and multi-provider\, are mostly comprised of heterogeneous technological domains requiring intelligent\, efficient and close coordination among all the parts. Such a federated and collaborative view has been set as the path forward for unlocking the required automation and flexibility and achieving the extreme requirements and constraints of such next generation of applications. In that sense\, this workshop intends to cover four key strands: \n\nCross-domain edge-to-cloud continuum management: This strand focuses on architectures\, mechanisms\, protocols\, and automated approaches for having and coordinating closed loops across multi-domain scenarios. This includes zero-touch-like strategies for dealing with a heterogeneous edge-to-cloud continuum across multiple domains. This also includes supporting tools for composing and coordinating closed loops spanning several domains.\nCloud continuum for B5G services\, applications\, and enablers: This strand focuses on the various services\, applications\, and enablers allowing the realization of the various Beyond 5G (B5G) applications and services\, including complex Internet of Things (IoT) verticals\, Mixed Reality\, Extended Reality (XR) collaborative applications\, next generation of holographic applications\, and tactile Internet scenarios. This strand covers B5G services and applications experiments\, pilots and evaluation of novel mechanisms and approaches for enabling such scenarios over the cloud continuum.\nAI nativeness in cloud-continuum: This strand focuses on the network and service intelligence. Intelligence can be introduced in network elements or by interacting across network elements. Alternatively\, intelligence can be achieved via a dedicated intelligence plane that would deal with selecting AI/ML algorithms and the associated AI/ML life cycle management\, e.g.\, inference and training. Intelligence can be also applied in deciding and orchestrating how to manage\, configure and coordinate AI/ML in different parts of the network. This includes formal methods for creating\, selecting and applying closed-loops to achieve automation and assist the network management and control in planning\, deployment and optimization phases.\nPrivacy\, security\, and trust in cross-domain cloud continuum: This strand focuses on specific privacy\, security\, and trust challenges\, such as cutting-edge proposals and solutions for ensuring privacy\, security\, and trust targeting cross-domain B5G scenarios running on cloud continuum. This includes formal methods for attesting and establishing trust liaisons in cross-domain scenarios\, and novel AI-powered mechanisms for timely responding and addressing incidents such as cyber-attacks or privacy violations in these cloud-continuum scenarios.\n\nThe proposed workshop topics specifically target cutting-edge and novel approaches for dealing with the emerging challenges of B5G Services and applications spanning multiple-domain cloud continuum and the intrinsical need to abstract and manage the underlying infrastructure to make those scenarios viable. This is a less explored topic of the leading conference. This workshop will be a platform to discuss the latest advancements in cloud-continuum B5G services and cross-domain computing management. \nOur community member aerOS project co-organises a workshop entitled “The Workshop on Intelligent Cloud Continuum for B5G Services.”

SUMMARY:Future Platforms for Cloud-Edge Continuum – Theoretical Foundations and Practical Considerations” Session
DESCRIPTION:ASSIST-IoT and aerOS EU research projects co-organise the special session “Future Platforms for Cloud-Edge Continuum – Theoretical Foundations and Practical Considerations” (Track ID: Spes-01) at IEEE 9th World Forum on Internet of Things (IEEE WFIoT 2023)\, 12–27 October 2023\, Aveiro\, Portugal. \nInternet of Things (IoT) brings fundamental changes to all sectors of society and economy.\nHowever\, realization of the IoT vision requires data processing (stream\, static\, or both) in an “optimal location” within the cloud-edge continuum. Within such continuum\, data can be produced\, stored\, and processed “anywhere”. For instance\, (1) far/nano-edge devices produce data act upon it locally\, (2) fog nodes process data stream locally\, while (3) cloud/HPC facilities deliver “unlimited” processing capabilities\, need\, for instance\, to train (large) AI models. Taking into account the\, systematically increasing\, scale of IoT deployments the question arises: what capabilities must be facilitated by future IoT platforms\, which will have to manage processes in multi-stakeholder\, multi-cloud\, federated\, large-scale IoT ecosystems.

SUMMARY:AIOTI Signature Event 2023
DESCRIPTION:Computing Continuum allows the exploitation of hybrid IoT-Edge-Cloud infrastructures with great flexibility while guaranteeing high-performance. Using Edge Intelligence (EI) enables executing computation tasks as close as possible to the data/event sources\, to enable complex yet time-sensitive applications of artificial intelligence (AI) over resource-constrained IoT devices. Such a transition of AI algorithms and models from the Cloud to the peripheral ecosystem and vice versa makes the EI beneficial for the whole spectrum of domains which are today limited by the conventional “sense-and-forward” approach typical of Cloud-based architectures.\nWe will explore how IoT and Edge Computing business driven scenarios and use cases can support these objectives and challenges\, in particular how to deal with current energy crisis\, CO2 reduction\, support circular economy and digital product passport\, impact on manufacturing and data spaces and measuring climate impact\, examine real-world use cases and international deployment of IoT\, Edge and Web 3.0 as complimentary solutions\, provide insights into where the Cloud-Edge Continuum ecosystem is going to struggle in the near future related to digital skills from policy\, research/academia and industry perspective. Examples will be presented of how I+D is challenged with Advanced Digital Skills shortage\, together with what are our current options to act today and secure a competitive European Cloud-Edge industry tomorrow and discuss what is next frontier in the computing continuum and how AIOTI can best contribute to overcome identified challenges\, having in mind key European policies and experience from other regions.\nWe will also present AIOTI initiated and led Web3 Accelerator demonstrate practical WEB3 implementations while enabling public and private user engagement and regulatory sandboxes and give for the first time AIOTI Award as recognition for exceptional achievements of our community. \nFind here the agenda of the event.

SUMMARY:CEC Workshop 2023
DESCRIPTION:Organized by: IEEE ICNP’23 – The 31st IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols\nSupported by EU Commission \nCall for Papers\nThe Cloud-Edge Continuum is a new hyper-distributed computing paradigm that aims at seamlessly interconnecting and abstracting the computing power and storage capacity of the Cloud with the data processing capabilities of edge devices\, IoT devices\, and sensors. Intelligently balancing tasks in a continuum enables faster response times\, lower latency\, and more efficient use of network bandwidth. However\, efficiently managing extremely heterogeneous Cloud and Edge resources is a pressing concern in real-world large-scale implementations. Such heterogeneity refers to differences in network capabilities\, processing power\, software stack\, APIs\, and security protocols across the Cloud-Edge Continuum infrastructure. This raises significant challenges for the network community to develop new and efficient protocols and communication services.\nGiven the potential benefits of the Cloud-Edge Continuum\, it is important to explore the current state-of-the-art research and identify the challenges and opportunities in this area. \nThe Cloud-Edge Continuum (CEC) workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to discuss the latest research\, trends\, and challenges in ecosystems and environments based on Cloud-Edge Continuum paradigm. The primary goal of this workshop is to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas among researchers and stakeholders. The workshop can provide a platform for participants to share their experiences\, best practices\, case studies\, and to identify emerging research areas and potential solutions to existing challenges. By bringing together experts from different domains\, the CEC workshop also aims to provide insights into how Cloud-Edge Continuum can be applied in various fields\, such as healthcare\, transportation\, smart cities\, and manufacturing. \nTopics of Interest\nWe welcome submissions of original research\, work-in-progress\, and proof of concepts describing original ideas and presenting new directions. We invite submissions covering the aspects around the design\, development\, and evaluation of architectures\, technologies\, and applications for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\, including but not limited to: \n\nNetwork optimization and interoperable protocols for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNovel system architectures and hardware designs in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNetwork security\, data privacy\, confidence\, and trust in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nServerless services and models for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nMobile computing and distributed autonomy in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nAI-enabled resource allocation\, federated learning\, and swarm intelligence in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nQoS provisioning\, QoE\, and SLA management in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nSustainable\, energy and carbon efficient connectivity in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNext generation smart use-cases enabled by the Cloud-Edge Continuum\n\nSubmission Guidelines\nSubmissions must be original\, unpublished work\, and not under consideration at another conference or journal. Paper submissions should adhere to the IEEE Conference formatting requirements with double column and the font size must be 10 points. The length of the final paper with all its content (including references) must not exceed 6 pages. Papers must include author’s names and affiliations for single-blind peer reviewing by the PC.
