SUMMARY:Future Platforms for Cloud-Edge Continuum – Theoretical Foundations and Practical Considerations” Session
DESCRIPTION:ASSIST-IoT and aerOS EU research projects co-organise the special session “Future Platforms for Cloud-Edge Continuum – Theoretical Foundations and Practical Considerations” (Track ID: Spes-01) at IEEE 9th World Forum on Internet of Things (IEEE WFIoT 2023)\, 12–27 October 2023\, Aveiro\, Portugal. \nInternet of Things (IoT) brings fundamental changes to all sectors of society and economy.\nHowever\, realization of the IoT vision requires data processing (stream\, static\, or both) in an “optimal location” within the cloud-edge continuum. Within such continuum\, data can be produced\, stored\, and processed “anywhere”. For instance\, (1) far/nano-edge devices produce data act upon it locally\, (2) fog nodes process data stream locally\, while (3) cloud/HPC facilities deliver “unlimited” processing capabilities\, need\, for instance\, to train (large) AI models. Taking into account the\, systematically increasing\, scale of IoT deployments the question arises: what capabilities must be facilitated by future IoT platforms\, which will have to manage processes in multi-stakeholder\, multi-cloud\, federated\, large-scale IoT ecosystems.

SUMMARY:AIOTI Signature Event 2023
DESCRIPTION:Computing Continuum allows the exploitation of hybrid IoT-Edge-Cloud infrastructures with great flexibility while guaranteeing high-performance. Using Edge Intelligence (EI) enables executing computation tasks as close as possible to the data/event sources\, to enable complex yet time-sensitive applications of artificial intelligence (AI) over resource-constrained IoT devices. Such a transition of AI algorithms and models from the Cloud to the peripheral ecosystem and vice versa makes the EI beneficial for the whole spectrum of domains which are today limited by the conventional “sense-and-forward” approach typical of Cloud-based architectures.\nWe will explore how IoT and Edge Computing business driven scenarios and use cases can support these objectives and challenges\, in particular how to deal with current energy crisis\, CO2 reduction\, support circular economy and digital product passport\, impact on manufacturing and data spaces and measuring climate impact\, examine real-world use cases and international deployment of IoT\, Edge and Web 3.0 as complimentary solutions\, provide insights into where the Cloud-Edge Continuum ecosystem is going to struggle in the near future related to digital skills from policy\, research/academia and industry perspective. Examples will be presented of how I+D is challenged with Advanced Digital Skills shortage\, together with what are our current options to act today and secure a competitive European Cloud-Edge industry tomorrow and discuss what is next frontier in the computing continuum and how AIOTI can best contribute to overcome identified challenges\, having in mind key European policies and experience from other regions.\nWe will also present AIOTI initiated and led Web3 Accelerator demonstrate practical WEB3 implementations while enabling public and private user engagement and regulatory sandboxes and give for the first time AIOTI Award as recognition for exceptional achievements of our community. \nFind here the agenda of the event.

SUMMARY:CEC Workshop 2023
DESCRIPTION:Organized by: IEEE ICNP’23 – The 31st IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols\nSupported by EU Commission \nCall for Papers\nThe Cloud-Edge Continuum is a new hyper-distributed computing paradigm that aims at seamlessly interconnecting and abstracting the computing power and storage capacity of the Cloud with the data processing capabilities of edge devices\, IoT devices\, and sensors. Intelligently balancing tasks in a continuum enables faster response times\, lower latency\, and more efficient use of network bandwidth. However\, efficiently managing extremely heterogeneous Cloud and Edge resources is a pressing concern in real-world large-scale implementations. Such heterogeneity refers to differences in network capabilities\, processing power\, software stack\, APIs\, and security protocols across the Cloud-Edge Continuum infrastructure. This raises significant challenges for the network community to develop new and efficient protocols and communication services.\nGiven the potential benefits of the Cloud-Edge Continuum\, it is important to explore the current state-of-the-art research and identify the challenges and opportunities in this area. \nThe Cloud-Edge Continuum (CEC) workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to discuss the latest research\, trends\, and challenges in ecosystems and environments based on Cloud-Edge Continuum paradigm. The primary goal of this workshop is to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas among researchers and stakeholders. The workshop can provide a platform for participants to share their experiences\, best practices\, case studies\, and to identify emerging research areas and potential solutions to existing challenges. By bringing together experts from different domains\, the CEC workshop also aims to provide insights into how Cloud-Edge Continuum can be applied in various fields\, such as healthcare\, transportation\, smart cities\, and manufacturing. \nTopics of Interest\nWe welcome submissions of original research\, work-in-progress\, and proof of concepts describing original ideas and presenting new directions. SUMMARY:The 1st International Workshop on Machine Learning for Autonomic System Operations in the Device-Edge-Cloud Continuum (MLSysOps 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Important Dates\nPaper Submission Deadline: 31 May 2023\nPaper Notification: 15 June 2023\nCamera Ready Deadline: 30 June 2023\nWorkshop Date: 25 September 2023 * full day * \nThe workshop\nTo address the ever-increasing deluge of data collected and processed by computing systems\, the trend of edge computing is establishing the effectiveness of processing data as close as possible to their source\, often consisting of dense networks of wireless sensor nodes and IoT devices.\nIt is predicted that by 2025 around 80% of enterprise data will be generated and processed outside the traditional cloud.\nIn fact\, edge computing is becoming even more attractive with the advent of energy-efficient micro-servers and powerful embedded devices with significant storage and processing capabilities.\nThe advent of device-cloud-edge (D-E-C) computing aggravates the challenging task of managing heterogeneous and distributed resources\, this time at an extreme scale\, making human-in-the-loop management completely unrealistic. To achieve dynamic and flexible system and application management with minimal user involvement\, the concept of autonomic computing systems was proposed as “computing systems that can manage themselves given high-level objectives from administrators”. However\, the scale\, heterogeneity\, high dynamicity\, and intrinsic local properties/variability of the continuum yields rule-based approaches – traditionally used in autonomic systems – insufficient. Machine learning-/AI-driven management is a promising alternative\, but the quest to extend this to the full continuum faces several challenges such as scalability\, heterogeneity\, dynamics\, trust & security\, and transparency. \nThe goal of the workshop is therefore to bring together a community of researchers and practitioners who study problems at the intersection of AI/ML\, autonomic and cognitive computing\, D-E-C continuum\, distributed system operation\, and resilient application deployment. \nTOPICS\nWorkshop suggested topics include\, but are not limited to empirical and theoretical studies of the following: \n\nAutonomic management and control of D-E-C continuum;\nML/AI-driven approaches for system operation of dynamic\, large-scale\, heterogeneous continuum systems;\nAgent-oriented architectures for D-E-C continuum orchestration;\nCognitive computing models in the edge-cloud continuum;\nAI/ML-based management of computing\, networking and storage resources in the continuum;\nGreen\, resource-efficient techniques for system operation;\nAI/ML-based trust and security methods in the edge-cloud continuum;\nNetwork and System Simulators for the D-E-C continuum;\nAI/ML-based application deployment in continuum systems.
