SUMMARY:The 1st International Workshop on Machine Learning for Autonomic System Operations in the Device-Edge-Cloud Continuum (MLSysOps 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Important Dates\nPaper Submission Deadline: 31 May 2023\nPaper Notification: 15 June 2023\nCamera Ready Deadline: 30 June 2023\nWorkshop Date: 25 September 2023 * full day * \nThe workshop\nTo address the ever-increasing deluge of data collected and processed by computing systems\, the trend of edge computing is establishing the effectiveness of processing data as close as possible to their source\, often consisting of dense networks of wireless sensor nodes and IoT devices.\nIt is predicted that by 2025 around 80% of enterprise data will be generated and processed outside the traditional cloud.\nIn fact\, edge computing is becoming even more attractive with the advent of energy-efficient micro-servers and powerful embedded devices with significant storage and processing capabilities.\nThe advent of device-cloud-edge (D-E-C) computing aggravates the challenging task of managing heterogeneous and distributed resources\, this time at an extreme scale\, making human-in-the-loop management completely unrealistic. To achieve dynamic and flexible system and application management with minimal user involvement\, the concept of autonomic computing systems was proposed as “computing systems that can manage themselves given high-level objectives from administrators”. However\, the scale\, heterogeneity\, high dynamicity\, and intrinsic local properties/variability of the continuum yields rule-based approaches – traditionally used in autonomic systems – insufficient. Machine learning-/AI-driven management is a promising alternative\, but the quest to extend this to the full continuum faces several challenges such as scalability\, heterogeneity\, dynamics\, trust & security\, and transparency. \nThe goal of the workshop is therefore to bring together a community of researchers and practitioners who study problems at the intersection of AI/ML\, autonomic and cognitive computing\, D-E-C continuum\, distributed system operation\, and resilient application deployment. \nTOPICS\nWorkshop suggested topics include\, but are not limited to empirical and theoretical studies of the following: \n\nAutonomic management and control of D-E-C continuum;\nML/AI-driven approaches for system operation of dynamic\, large-scale\, heterogeneous continuum systems;\nAgent-oriented architectures for D-E-C continuum orchestration;\nCognitive computing models in the edge-cloud continuum;\nAI/ML-based management of computing\, networking and storage resources in the continuum;\nGreen\, resource-efficient techniques for system operation;\nAI/ML-based trust and security methods in the edge-cloud continuum;\nNetwork and System Simulators for the D-E-C continuum;\nAI/ML-based application deployment in continuum systems.

SUMMARY:EUCloudEdgeIoT at NexusForum2023
DESCRIPTION:Fostering Innovation for Europe’s Sovereign Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNexusForum2023 will create a unique space for exploring together new\, high-impact technological collaborations between the European research and industry ecosystems. \nThe rapid consolidation of the Edge Computing paradigm is having an extraordinary impact on Europe at scientific\, technological\, socio-economic\, and geopolitical levels\, as traditionally separated fields like HPC\, Cloud\, and IoT are now converging into a large and heterogeneous Computing Continuum that brings a number of amazing opportunities but also significant challenges. \nNexusForum2023 is a unique physical event aimed at exploring technological synergies between the European Alliance for Industrial Data\, Edge and Cloud\, the EU companies and Members States involved in the IPCEI on Cloud Infrastructure & Services\, and the community of research and innovation projects developed under the Horizon Europe programme. \n\nThe transition from H2020 to HE reflects an ongoing mega-trend in ICT: the convergence of Cloud\, Edge\, and IoT. This tendency has significant impact in Europe at scientific\, technological\, socio-economic\, and geopolitical levels\, as these traditionally separated fields are now converging into a much larger ecosystem now sharing a number of common challenges and key priorities. Upcoming RIAs should integrate and capitalise on ongoing efforts\, with a vital aspect for Europe in this whole process being to successfully combine and consolidate the technology priorities defined by EU industry through the “European Alliance for Industrial Data\, Edge and Cloud” and the advancements that the IPCEI-CIS will provide in the coming years. This transition and the move of the whole community of EC-funded projects and related initiatives towards a closer cooperation with industry is what the NexusForum.EU project aims to support and facilitate by focusing on consolidating research and policy along the Cognitive Computing Continuum\, something crucial to effectively expand what the ongoing CSAs (particularly EUCloudEdgeIoT) are working on\, thus providing a clear\, consistent vision for future research and innovation topics in this EU strategic area. NexusForum.EU\, through its unique consortium\, will be able to effectively undertake a number of crucial activities\, such as producing annual research roadmaps and policy recommendations; fostering collaboration between industry and academia; creating solid links with the IPCEI-CIS and the “European Alliance for Industrial Data\, Edge and Cloud”; collaborating with past and present RIAs in order to promote a diverse EU research and innovation community; identifying relevant issues such skills development gaps; analysing the relationship with crucial topics such as Open Source and Open Standards; and engaging with forward-looking research and innovation communities and strategic initiatives outside Europe (starting with Japan & South Korea). \nClick here to find the session of EUCloudEdgeIoT and the full programme

SUMMARY:CEC Workshop 2023
DESCRIPTION:Organized by: IEEE ICNP’23 – The 31st IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols\nSupported by EU Commission \nCall for Papers\nThe Cloud-Edge Continuum is a new hyper-distributed computing paradigm that aims at seamlessly interconnecting and abstracting the computing power and storage capacity of the Cloud with the data processing capabilities of edge devices\, IoT devices\, and sensors. Intelligently balancing tasks in a continuum enables faster response times\, lower latency\, and more efficient use of network bandwidth. However\, efficiently managing extremely heterogeneous Cloud and Edge resources is a pressing concern in real-world large-scale implementations. Such heterogeneity refers to differences in network capabilities\, processing power\, software stack\, APIs\, and security protocols across the Cloud-Edge Continuum infrastructure. This raises significant challenges for the network community to develop new and efficient protocols and communication services.\nGiven the potential benefits of the Cloud-Edge Continuum\, it is important to explore the current state-of-the-art research and identify the challenges and opportunities in this area. \nThe Cloud-Edge Continuum (CEC) workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to discuss the latest research\, trends\, and challenges in ecosystems and environments based on Cloud-Edge Continuum paradigm. The primary goal of this workshop is to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas among researchers and stakeholders. The workshop can provide a platform for participants to share their experiences\, best practices\, case studies\, and to identify emerging research areas and potential solutions to existing challenges. By bringing together experts from different domains\, the CEC workshop also aims to provide insights into how Cloud-Edge Continuum can be applied in various fields\, such as healthcare\, transportation\, smart cities\, and manufacturing. \nTopics of Interest\nWe welcome submissions of original research\, work-in-progress\, and proof of concepts describing original ideas and presenting new directions. We invite submissions covering the aspects around the design\, development\, and evaluation of architectures\, technologies\, and applications for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\, including but not limited to: \n\nNetwork optimization and interoperable protocols for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNovel system architectures and hardware designs in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNetwork security\, data privacy\, confidence\, and trust in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nServerless services and models for the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nMobile computing and distributed autonomy in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nAI-enabled resource allocation\, federated learning\, and swarm intelligence in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nQoS provisioning\, QoE\, and SLA management in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nSustainable\, energy and carbon efficient connectivity in the Cloud-Edge Continuum\nNext generation smart use-cases enabled by the Cloud-Edge Continuum\n\nSubmission Guidelines\nSubmissions must be original\, unpublished work\, and not under consideration at another conference or journal. Paper submissions should adhere to the IEEE Conference formatting requirements with double column and the font size must be 10 points. SUMMARY:AIOTI Signature Event 2023
DESCRIPTION:Computing Continuum allows the exploitation of hybrid IoT-Edge-Cloud infrastructures with great flexibility while guaranteeing high-performance. Using Edge Intelligence (EI) enables executing computation tasks as close as possible to the data/event sources\, to enable complex yet time-sensitive applications of artificial intelligence (AI) over resource-constrained IoT devices. Such a transition of AI algorithms and models from the Cloud to the peripheral ecosystem and vice versa makes the EI beneficial for the whole spectrum of domains which are today limited by the conventional “sense-and-forward” approach typical of Cloud-based architectures.\nWe will explore how IoT and Edge Computing business driven scenarios and use cases can support these objectives and challenges\, in particular how to deal with current energy crisis\, CO2 reduction\, support circular economy and digital product passport\, impact on manufacturing and data spaces and measuring climate impact\, examine real-world use cases and international deployment of IoT\, Edge and Web 3.0 as complimentary solutions\, provide insights into where the Cloud-Edge Continuum ecosystem is going to struggle in the near future related to digital skills from policy\, research/academia and industry perspective. Examples will be presented of how I+D is challenged with Advanced Digital Skills shortage\, together with what are our current options to act today and secure a competitive European Cloud-Edge industry tomorrow and discuss what is next frontier in the computing continuum and how AIOTI can best contribute to overcome identified challenges\, having in mind key European policies and experience from other regions.\nWe will also present AIOTI initiated and led Web3 Accelerator demonstrate practical WEB3 implementations while enabling public and private user engagement and regulatory sandboxes and give for the first time AIOTI Award as recognition for exceptional achievements of our community. \nFind here the agenda of the event.

SUMMARY:Future Platforms for Cloud-Edge Continuum – Theoretical Foundations and Practical Considerations” Session
DESCRIPTION:ASSIST-IoT and aerOS EU research projects co-organise the special session “Future Platforms for Cloud-Edge Continuum – Theoretical Foundations and Practical Considerations” (Track ID: Spes-01) at IEEE 9th World Forum on Internet of Things (IEEE WFIoT 2023)\, 12–27 October 2023\, Aveiro\, Portugal. \nInternet of Things (IoT) brings fundamental changes to all sectors of society and economy.\nHowever\, realization of the IoT vision requires data processing (stream\, static\, or both) in an “optimal location” within the cloud-edge continuum. Within such continuum\, data can be produced\, stored\, and processed “anywhere”. For instance\, (1) far/nano-edge devices produce data act upon it locally\, (2) fog nodes process data stream locally\, while (3) cloud/HPC facilities deliver “unlimited” processing capabilities\, need\, for instance\, to train (large) AI models. Taking into account the\, systematically increasing\, scale of IoT deployments the question arises: what capabilities must be facilitated by future IoT platforms\, which will have to manage processes in multi-stakeholder\, multi-cloud\, federated\, large-scale IoT ecosystems.

SUMMARY:IEEE International Conference on Cloud Networking
DESCRIPTION:IEEE International Conference on Cloud Networking\nBeyond 5G (B5G) applications and services offer unprecedented opportunities for innovation and progress. Nonetheless\, achieving such a vision requires a new breed of intelligent mechanisms\, protocols and autonomous architectures capable of truly taking advantage of the entire edge-to-cloud computing spectrum. \nIn particular\, cross-domain scenarios\, which include multi-cloud and multi-provider\, are mostly comprised of heterogeneous technological domains requiring intelligent\, efficient and close coordination among all the parts. Such a federated and collaborative view has been set as the path forward for unlocking the required automation and flexibility and achieving the extreme requirements and constraints of such next generation of applications. In that sense\, this workshop intends to cover four key strands: \n\nCross-domain edge-to-cloud continuum management: This strand focuses on architectures\, mechanisms\, protocols\, and automated approaches for having and coordinating closed loops across multi-domain scenarios. This includes zero-touch-like strategies for dealing with a heterogeneous edge-to-cloud continuum across multiple domains. This also includes supporting tools for composing and coordinating closed loops spanning several domains.\nCloud continuum for B5G services\, applications\, and enablers: This strand focuses on the various services\, applications\, and enablers allowing the realization of the various Beyond 5G (B5G) applications and services\, including complex Internet of Things (IoT) verticals\, Mixed Reality\, Extended Reality (XR) collaborative applications\, next generation of holographic applications\, and tactile Internet scenarios. This strand covers B5G services and applications experiments\, pilots and evaluation of novel mechanisms and approaches for enabling such scenarios over the cloud continuum.\nAI nativeness in cloud-continuum: This strand focuses on the network and service intelligence. Intelligence can be introduced in network elements or by interacting across network elements. Alternatively\, intelligence can be achieved via a dedicated intelligence plane that would deal with selecting AI/ML algorithms and the associated AI/ML life cycle management\, e.g.\, inference and training. Intelligence can be also applied in deciding and orchestrating how to manage\, configure and coordinate AI/ML in different parts of the network. This includes formal methods for creating\, selecting and applying closed-loops to achieve automation and assist the network management and control in planning\, deployment and optimization phases.\nPrivacy\, security\, and trust in cross-domain cloud continuum: This strand focuses on specific privacy\, security\, and trust challenges\, such as cutting-edge proposals and solutions for ensuring privacy\, security\, and trust targeting cross-domain B5G scenarios running on cloud continuum. This includes formal methods for attesting and establishing trust liaisons in cross-domain scenarios\, and novel AI-powered mechanisms for timely responding and addressing incidents such as cyber-attacks or privacy violations in these cloud-continuum scenarios.\n\nThe proposed workshop topics specifically target cutting-edge and novel approaches for dealing with the emerging challenges of B5G Services and applications spanning multiple-domain cloud continuum and the intrinsical need to abstract and manage the underlying infrastructure to make those scenarios viable. This is a less explored topic of the leading conference. This workshop will be a platform to discuss the latest advancements in cloud-continuum B5G services and cross-domain computing management. \nOur community member aerOS project co-organises a workshop entitled “The Workshop on Intelligent Cloud Continuum for B5G Services.”

SUMMARY:International Workshop on the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum for Hyper-Distributed Applications and Services (CEICO)
DESCRIPTION:International Workshop on the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum for Hyper-Distributed Applications and Services (CEICO)\nCo-located with the 16th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing (UCC 2023)\, 4-7 December\, Taormina\, Italy \nThe advent of the Cloud-Edge-IoT computing paradigm is revolutionizing the provisioning of hyper-distributed applications leveraging ecosystems of smart and highly heterogeneous Internet of Things (IoT) devices (e.g.\, sensors\, robots\, cameras). Unprecedented services are expected to be provided based on the pervasive interaction with and between smart things in a Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum. Robotics\, healthcare\, logistics\, and energy management\, among others\, are use-case domains that will strongly benefit from this paradigm. However\, an inherent need for novel architectural approaches\, able to support by design a full convergence and integration among existing and evolving IoT and edge computing technologies into the continuum is strongly felt. Efficient management of extremely heterogeneous Cloud\, Edge and IoT resources is a high concern in real-world implementations. In parallel\, data processing and analytics are foreseen to rapidly shift towards edge computing facilities to foster data locality. To efficiently manage data management and analysis over such distributed environments\, novel hyper-distributed applications are even more embracing microservices-based and cloud-native computing technologies\, while distributed computing principles are deeply evolving their lifecycle orchestration paradigms to efficiently exploit resources in the continuum. \nThe aim of this workshop is to offer researchers and practitioners from academia and industry\, in the related areas of Cloud\, Edge\, Fog\, Big Data\, Grid\, and Cluster Computing communities\, a venue on the recent advances in ecosystems and environments based on the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum paradigm. Submitted papers are expected to focus on the recent advances in theory\, application\, standardization\, and implementation in the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum domain. \nTopics of interest for this workshop are (but not limited to): \n\nClouds federation and interoperability\nCloud-Edge-IoT programming\nCloud-Edge-IoT computing standards\nCloud-Edge-IoT Orchestration and Automation\nCloud and Fog robotics in the continuum\nEnergy efficiency in Cloud-Edge-IoT\nCloud-Edge-IoT middleware\nAI-assisted solutions for the Cloud continuum\nFederated learning and AI models in the continuum\nCloud-Edge-IoT security\nSemantic models for the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum\nIntent-based orchestration\nTime-Sensitive Networking (TSN) for the continuum\nSDN and NFV in beyond 5G networks\nSelf-organising and self-healing solutions for 5G and 6G networks\nTestbed development and real-world deployment in the continuum\nOther topics related to the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum are welcome as well\n\nOur community member\, NEPHELE project\, participates to the workshop.
