SUMMARY:WOCC'23 - International Workshop on Converged Computing
DESCRIPTION:WOCC’23 – International Workshop on Converged Computing\nIntroduction\nThe landscape of scientific computing is changing rapidly as complex\, multi-stage pipelined workflows that combine traditional HPC computations with large-scale data analytics and AI are becoming increasingly common. These next-generation workflows seek to improve the efficiency and scale of traditional HPC simulations and apply large-scale and distributed computing to domains with high societal impact\, such as autonomous vehicles\, precision agriculture\, or smart cities. Such complex workflows are expected to require the coordinated use of supercomputers\, cloud data centres\, and edge-processing devices\, leading to an era of Converged Computing that combines the best of these worlds. \nCloud computing technologies are gaining prevalence in HPC due to their benefits of resource dynamism\, automation\, reproducibility\, and resilience. Similarly\, HPC technologies for application performance optimisation and sophisticated scheduling of complex resources are being integrated into modern cloud infrastructures. However\, the convergence of HPC and cloud also raises new challenges in resource management\, data transfers\, storage and throughput. Modern cloud and HPC frameworks provide heterogeneous resources\, including processors and accelerators\, diverse types of memories and storage\, and network links\, to match the diversity in workloads. Similarly\, cloud technologies for elasticity\, resilience\, and multi-tenancy need to be adopted in HPC while ensuring high performance and throughput. Converged software stacks will need to provide middleware and resource management to facilitate the use of heterogeneous hardware components\, improve system utilisation\, and provide seamless interfaces for users and application developers. \nThe First Workshop on Converged Computing (WOCC’23) will provide the edge\, HPC and cloud communities a dedicated venue for discussing challenges and research opportunities\, deployment efforts\, and best practices in supporting complex workflows on the coordinated use of supercomputers and cloud data centres as well as edge-processing devices. The workshop encourages interaction between participants developing applications\, algorithms\, middleware and infrastructure for converged environments. The workshop will be ideal for the community to define the current state-of-the-art\, and identify fundamental challenges and feasible future technologies and techniques. The workshop aims to start a discussion on questions\, including: \n\nwhat changes to architecture\, hardware\, and middleware designs (including hardware monitoring\, operating systems\, system software\, and resource management) are needed?\nHow to monitor and collect system-level metrics for utilisation to identify bottlenecks to meet the different targets in performance\, cost\, and power budget?\nHow to support different coupling patterns (e.g.\, loose or tight) between traditional scientific and big-data/AI components?\nWhat complex workflows and workloads leverage heterogeneity\, elasticity\, and dynamic resources provisioning?\n\nImportant Dates\n\nPaper Submission – Mar 25\, 2023\nAuthor Notifications – Apr 10\, 2023\nCamera Ready Papers – June 10\, 2023\, including Copyright Form\nWorkshop day – May 25\, 2023\n\nOrganisers\n\nIvy Peng (KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, Sweden)\nTapasya Patki (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\, USA)\nDaniel Milroy (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\, USA)\n\nProgram Committee\n\nJae-Seung Yeom\, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\, USA\nAndrew Younge\, Sandia National Laboratory\, USA\nJeff Vetter\, Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, USA\nNathan Tallent\, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory\, USA\nBill Magro\, Google\, USA\nMartin Schulz\, Technische Universität München\, Germany\nJesus Carretero\, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid\, Spain\nDomenico Talia\, University of Calabria\, Italy\nEstela Suarez\, Julich Supercomputing Centre\, Germany\nErwin Laure\, Max Planck Computing and Data Facility\, Germany\nJakob Luettgau\, University of Tennessee Knoxville\, USA\nKento Sato\, Riken\, Japan\nClaudia Misale\, IBM\, USA\nYoonho Park\, IBM\, USA\n\nTopics of Interest\nWe invite both short paper (8 pages single column) or full papers (12 pages single column) of original works. SUMMARY:Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT
DESCRIPTION:Scope of the Event\nThe blurring barriers between Cloud and Edge computing are giving birth to a computing continuum where services and data must be managed and secured efficiently. Especially with new trends like the Metaverse\, the demand for (hybrid) cloud computing services and edge computing is expected to skyrocket. As recent studies suggest\, new data processing needs are appearing at the edge. This not only for reducing latency but also to ensure data availability and privacy protection.  Running and managing data analytics and AI where it is more efficient and effective is to be supported in the Cloud-Edge-IOT continuum. \nAdvancing the IoT can avoid skyrocketing communication and storage costs\, energy consumption and produce benefits for citizens and businesses thanks to the integration of AI and Machine Learning. \nIn addition\, an open ecosystem built around Open Source and Open Standards is key to unleashing the potential of the European industry in driving green and digital transformation while preserving EU strategic autonomy. Software defined infrastructures based on Open Source and Open Standards will support the next step in the Cloud-Edge-IOT continuum while preventing lock-in and favouring a competitive economy for the benefit of EU citizens. \nThese trends have called for a shift towards the technical and business convergence of the so-far formally separated Cloud\, Edge and IoT domains\, towards an open Cloud\, Edge and IoT Computing Continuum. \nIn the recent years\, the European community of researchers and innovators at work on the next generation Cloud\, Edge and IoT computing has been growing in relevance\, diversity and impact. For Europe to ensure its technological sovereignty and ground the vision of a computing continuum as the backbone of an open and inclusive society\, it is necessary to overcome fragmentation\, bring together organisations and individuals from different communities and leverage Open Source. The Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT meeting is a 2-day physical event organised within the context of the European\, Cloud\, Edge and IoT Continuum initiative by the OpenContinuum consortium in close collaboration with the UNLOCK-CEI and SW Forum projects and guided by the  European Commission DG CNECT E.2 and E.4 Units. \nStructure of the Days\nThe first day of the event will be concertation oriented. The invited Horizon Europe RIAs which started in 2023 will have the opportunity to pitch their projects and introduce the plans for the future\, while the more mature Horizon 2020 projects and the Horizon Europe projects started in 2022 will discuss their assets\, and share lessons learned and success stories. In fact\, it will be an important opportunity for the H2020 projects to further exploit and handover their results to the new RIAs\, who will have a greater picture of the work they can build upon. CSAs such as EU-IoT\, SW Forum and HUB4CLOUD will also demonstrate the accomplishments of the projects they have supported. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking including a cocktail dinner\, and\, in addition\, the EUCloudEdgeIoT Cooperation Mechanisms (task forces) will be discussed. \nThe second day will shift to a consultation\, with the goal to bring forward thinking for the next Horizon Europe Work Programme (2025-2027). Through a Call for Expressions of Interest with new trends\, vision and tracks for research\, it will be selected the best short papers to be presented at the event. The call is open to any interested party\, from academic researchers to industrial players\, funded EC projects\, policy makers and SMEs. Research roadmaps will also be presented by initiatives such as SW Forum\, HiPEAC\, NESSI\, AIOTI\, European Alliance for Industrial Data\, Edge and Cloud\, INSIDE\, FIWARE foundation. \nWhy should you attend?\n\nLearn from and exchange know-how with the major EU funded initiatives and projects on data and computing technologies.\nShowcase and promote your work within the broader European R&I context for further adoption\, exploitation and impact of your project’s outcomes.\nEstablish liaisons and contacts within the European Cloud\, Edge and IoT community to identify common interests and foster synergies and collaborations.\nLearn about industrial best practices/use cases across several industrial sectors where European organisations are playing a significant role.\nLearn about policy/funding plans priorities and help refining the plans to deliver the European Strategy for data grounding the Digital Decade vision.\nBe part of the discussions about future R&I priorities and plans\, help shaping agendas and decisions on future investments.\nContribute to strategic R&I roadmaps to increase the competitiveness of European industry in Europe and ensure EU’s technology independence in Software\, Cloud\, Edge and IoT domains.\nThe event will group the community of major players in Europe engaged in several EU funded projects\, including the ICT-50-2020 (Software Technologies)\, ICT-40-2020 (Cloud Computing)\, ICT-56-2020 (Next Generation IoT)\, HORIZON-CL4-2021-DATA-01-05 (MetaOS)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DATA-01-02 (Cognitive Cloud)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022- DATA-01-03 (Swarm Computing)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01-26 (Open source for cloud-based services). SUMMARY:Fast Continuum 2023
DESCRIPTION:Fast Continuum 2023\nNowadays\, cloud computing is widely used by industry\, with an estimate of the worldwide cloud market of about 940 USD billion with a compound annual growth rate of about 16%. Cloud computing provides\, among others\, the capacity to run the backend of web applications\, train artificial intelligence applications\, or run big data analytics. However\, the accelerated migration towards mobile computing and the Internet of Things\, where widespread end-devices generate a huge amount of data\, is determining the rise of the computing continuum paradigm\, where resources are distributed among devices with highly heterogeneous capacities. This promises reduced latency and higher throughput thanks to local processing. However\, there are still many open challenges concerning the fast development\, testing\, and operation of computing continuum software\, especially when we must provide specific performance guarantees in the end-to-end application execution. Indeed\, computing continua are inherently fragmented\, IoT/edge devices are highly heterogeneous\, providing different computing capabilities but also introducing proprietary development\, deployment and operation frameworks. In this context\, dominating the complexity of multiple coexisting frameworks and managing component placement and resource allocation become crucial to orchestrate\, at best\, the continuum of resources. \nThe goal of the FastContinuum2023 workshop is to foster discussion and collaboration among researchers from cloud/edge/fog/computing continuum and performance analysis communities to share the relevant topics and results of the current approaches.

SUMMARY:COMMON TAXONOMY FOR EU METAOS: EUCloudEdgeIot workshop
DESCRIPTION:COMMON TAXONOMY FOR EU METAOS: EUCloudEdgeIot workshop\nThe EUCloudEdgeIoT initiative invites participation in the COMMON TAXONOMY workshop for EU METAOS. This event will gather representatives of EU MetaOS projects to work collaboratively on the development of a common standardised taxonomy for all MetaOs European projects. \nThe workshop will be held online and will last 2 hours. As explained during the EUCloudEdgeIoT.eu launch event (February 8th)\, one of the goals of Task Force 3 (Architecture) is to develop a shared taxonomy for all European projects and initiatives in our field of expertise. \nThe idea is that everyone uses the same words to refer to the same things\, eliminating ambiguities and duplication of terminology and being as specific as possible. EUCloudEdgeIoT will process your inputs and provide the European Union with this commonly agreed taxonomy. \nAs a key specialist in the European Cloud\, Edge & IoT Continuum landscape\, your experience and knowledge will be fundamental in defining the terms that should be included. You will get a final date and agenda ASAP.

SUMMARY:OpenContinuum Webinar: IoT and Edge at Eclipse: Making Sense of the Puzzle
DESCRIPTION:OpenContinuum Webinar: IoT and Edge at Eclipse: Making Sense of the Puzzle\nFrédéric Desbiens manages IoT and Edge Computing programs at the Eclipse Foundation\, Europe’s largest open-source organisation. His job is to help the community innovate by bringing devices and software together. He is a strong supporter of open source. In the past\, he worked as a product manager\, solutions architect\, and developer for companies as diverse as Pivotal\, Cisco\, and Oracle. Frédéric holds an MBA in electronic commerce\, a BASc in Computer Science\, and a BEd\, all from Université Laval (Québec City\, Canada). \nAs of November 2022\, there were over 40 projects in the Eclipse IoT and Edge Native portfolio. Some of them are well-known; some of them are more obscure. Together\, they probably are the most exhaustive toolkit of its kind in the industry. However\, with that many projects\, it is sometimes difficult to figure out which one to pick for a specific use case. The aim of this presentation is to describe the most active Eclipse IoT and Edge projects and position them in a typical IoT architecture. \nFrédéric is the author of “Building Enterprise IoT Solutions using Eclipse IoT Technologies: An Open-Source Approach to Edge Computing\,” published in 2022 by Apress (ISBN: 978-1484288818).

SUMMARY:The European Cloud\, Edge & IoT Continuum – 1st Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The European Cloud\, Edge & IoT Continuum – 1st Webinar\nBackground\nAs recently explained by Max Lemke\, head of the Internet of Things Unit at the European Commission\, It is expected that in the middle of this decade\, most of the data processing and analytics will take place where they are the most efficient\, which is generally close to where the data is generated: at the edge of the network. While today 80% of the processing and analysis of data takes place in data centres and centralised computing facilities and 20% in smart connected objects\, such percentages are foreseen to revert soon. This change calls for a shift from centralised computing facilities to a Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum. \nThe European Union is supporting the evolution of computing continuum along several lines\, including the Chips Act\, Data Legislation\, Data and Cloud Strategy and Research and Innovation Programmes. \nSpecifically among the funded research programmes\, there is the cluster of projects on Meta-Operating Systems for the Next Generation IoT and Edge Computing\, recently presented at the IoT Week 2022 in Dublin. \nUNLOCK CEI is one of the Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) funded in this cluster to understand and predict possible market scenarios at the convergence of Cloud\, Edge and IoT (CEI) technologies and support their adoption by companies and other relevant industrial players. \nTo this aim\, an engaged community of CEI adopters will be constituted to help us understand the requirements for the future uptake of such technologies and provide insights to guide future research and innovation in this field. \nAbout the webinar\nThe first UNLOCK CEI webinar\, part of the EUCloudEdgeIoT.eu initiative\, is the occasion to present the project’s objectives and goals and its interaction with the broader policy context and the other initiatives funded under the same topics. \nThe event also allows the opportunity to meet the people behind the project\, interact with them during a poll session and a panel discussion\, and understand why and how to get involved. \nWho should attend \nThe event is free and open to anyone interested in the cloud\, edge\, and IoT domains and related topics\, including but not limited to Artificial Intelligence\, Interoperability\, ICT security and connectivity. However\, the following professionals are especially invited to participate: \n\nBusiness users: including companies and other industrial players interested in using CEI\, operating in various industrial sectors\, such as manufacturing\, building\, mobility\, energy\, agriculture\nInfrastructure and Tech Providers: including hardware\, chips and device providers\, system integrators and maintainers\, edge and multicloud platforms\, connectivity and open-source projects\nService and Application Providers: embedded intelligence and applications\, computing\, storage\, analytics\, network slices\, orchestrators\, security\nData Management: Intermediators\, Connectors\, Federators\, Pipelines\, Resellers\, Brokers\nFacilitators: including SDOs\, public bodies\, PPPs\, industry associations\, data spaces\nResearch\, Development and Innovation : including R&D Industry Departments\, Research Institutions and Universities\, Research Associations\, Digital Innovation Hubs.\n\nAgenda\n\n15:00 – Introduction\nGolboo Pourabdollahian\, Consulting Manager\, European Government Consulting\, IDC\n15:10 – Why investigating the Cloud-Edge-IoT domain?\nJohn Gole\, Research Director\, European IoT Practice\, IDC\n15:25 – Get involved: value and benefits  \nMarlene Eisenträger\, Consultant\, VDI/VDE IT\n15:40 – Panel Discussion “Understanding Cloud-Edge-IoT: challenges and opportunities”\nModerator: Maria Giuffrida\, Senior Researcher\, Trust-IT\n\n\nKay Bierzynski\, Senior Project Manager\, Infineon and EPoSS\nBrendan Rowan\, Managing Consultant for Tech\, Policy and Skills\, Bluspecs\nNatalie Samovich\, WG Energy Chair\, AIOTI\nAlbert Seubers\, Director\, Martel BV\nRainer Sträter\, SVP Cloud Services and Global Platform Hosting\, IONOS\n\n\n16:20 – Q&A\n16:30 – Conclusion\n\nWatch the Full Recording
