SUMMARY:Giving Energy an Edge: Showcasing the Edge to Cloud Continuum in Energy
DESCRIPTION:Giving Energy an Edge: Showcasing the Edge to Cloud Continuum in Energy\nThe Energy Infoday that took place on Friday 10th November\, 2023\, at 10:00 (CET)\, brought together over 100 attendees\, including industry experts\, innovators\, researchers\, developers\, SMEs\, start-ups and energy company stakeholders to discuss the latest trends and technologies shaping the future of energy and innovations of the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum in Energy sector. We are very thankful for every participant and want to express our special gratitude to all speakers\, panellists\, open calls and use case representatives for their diverse input as well as adding depth to the conversations that followed. \nThe Infoday kicked off by exploring the general landscape of SME innovation in the Grid Edge sector\, spotlighting the EU CEI MetaOS projects. This broad view was further complimented by a presentation showcasing a panoramic view of various European project clusters working on transforming and digitising the energy sector. \nAfter a first overview of the current state of innovation\, those inputs were reflected and augmented by gathering valuable inputs on the current transition challenges on topics such as energy infrastructure\, adaptability\, and electrification of heat and mobility. During a panel discussion\, they were critically analysed from an overarching\, institutional and energy distributor perspective\, which was shared as well as contrasted by the point of view of energy start-ups.  \nShifting from general to more specific topics over time\, the event gave the floor to a section where various EU CEI-funded research and innovation projects got the opportunity to first pitch their current open call opportunities. The goal was to spark interest and active involvement from SMEs\, start-ups\, and developers in the EU Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum. Following this was a narrative showcase of seven different energy use cases ranging from smart cities\, mobility\, and grid flexibility to windmill maintenance. \nWrapping up the Infoday\, attendees engaged in network opportunities with the projects in interactive breakout sessions to collect more input on the technical aspects of the projects\, gather advice on the open call process or interact with additional projects in a demo room discussing their current progress in the establishment and development of energy use cases. \nThe main takeaways from the Energy Infoday were the following: \n\nInsights into the most transformative use cases at the crossroads of energy and Cloud-Edge-IoT computing.\nExploration of funding and support opportunities for diverse energy projects and engagement in open call applications.\nConnections with key stakeholders in the European tech ecosystem.\nLearnings on how emerging edge technologies can benefit businesses and an understanding of the opportunities for transitioning to a CEI approach.\nExploration of potential energy-centred applications and development of new products and services.\nIdentification of partners\, customers\, and alternative architectures within the Cloud Continuum in energy.\n\nAgenda\n(Download full slide deck) \n10:00 Welcome \n• Brendan Rowan\, BluSpecs\, UNLOCK-CEI \n10:05 MetaOS – An opportunity for SMEs in the Grid Edge\n \n• Rolf Riemenschneider\, Head of Sector IoT\, EC – DG CNECT \n10:30 Energy sector transformation through digital integration; a meta analysis of key use cases from European R&I \n• Natalie Samovich\, Chair AIOTI WG Energy\, Enercoutim \n10:45 Powering the future; tech transformation of the energy sector in full transition \n• Selene Liverani\, Senior Technology and Projects Advisor\, E.DSO – European Distribution System Operators\n• Valerie Anne Lencznar\, Senior Advisor at RTE and Ambassador for Europe\, Global Smart Energy Federation\n• Dieter Jong\, Sales Lead\, Finance\, HR & Legal at re.alto energy\n• Nicolas Höning\, Co-Founder at SEITA\n• Tanya Suárez (Moderating)\, BluSpecs\, UNLOCK-CEI \n11:30 Open Calls Opportunities \n• Ignacio Lacalle Úbeda\, Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV)\, aerOS\n• Elena Japundžić\, FundingBox\, ICOS\n• Dimitrios Skias\, INTRA\, NEMO\n• Anastasios Zafeiropoulos\, National Technical University of Athens\, NEPHELE\n• Ana Luísa Alves\, F6S\, NebulOuS \n11:40 MetaOS Energy use cases \nNarrative presentation \n• Energy Efficient\, Health Safe & Sustainable Smart Buildings (aerOS)\no The use case will demonstrate gains of the aerOS architecture in an edge deployment for energy efficient\, sustainable\, flexible and health-safe smart buildings.\no Speaker: Fotini Setaki\, COSMOTE\n• Containerised Edge Computing Near Renewable Energy Sources (aerOS)\no The use case will allow management of containerised edge data centres developed by CF and located directly at energy sources\, connected to the smart infrastructure and providing cloud continuity.\no Speaker: Marcin Michel\, ELECTRUM\n• Energy Management and Decision Support System (EMDS) (ICOS)\no This use case supports the planned enablement of domestic services to support the distribution network which will further drive uptake in smart\, controllable domestic devices as well as leverage payments for flexible energy usage.\no Speaker: Rosalia Davi\, SSE Airtricity\n• Smart Mobility (NEMO)\no This use case will utilize basic geography\, street-level\, public transportation\, weather and noise data\, along with historical data and analysis of CCTV/traffic cameras to model and train distributed AI models on traffic flow and parking prediction in a greedy layer wise fashion.\no Speaker: Francesco Bellesini\, EMOTION\n• Smart Grid Flexibility (NEMO)\no This use case will utilise innovative high-tech power sensors which realise advanced protection for MV/LV substation breakers and smart meters in RES\, buildings and offices to measure and balance electricity generation/consumption.\no Speaker: Prashanth Kumar Pedholla\, ASM\n• Energy Management in Smart Buildings/Cities (NEPHELE)\no This use case will use smart applications and services leveraging on the VOStack which can help to manage control actions of building equipment\, providing user with customized services for energy-efficient\, well-being and comfort.\no Speaker: Raphael Marin Perez\, ODINS\n• Windmill Maintenance (NebulOuS)\no This use case will validate the NebulOuS framework in deploying wind turbine inspection software in an optimal way\, making appropriate use of cloud and fog resources\, for instance through high-resolution images of wind turbine blades captured by drones\, which are processed by AI-enabled algorithms to automatically detect turbine damages and discover other valuable information for turbine maintenance.\no Speaker: Michał Kłosiński\, TTA \n12:20 Breakout Sessions \n1. SUMMARY:Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT
DESCRIPTION:Scope of the Event\nThe blurring barriers between Cloud and Edge computing are giving birth to a computing continuum where services and data must be managed and secured efficiently. Especially with new trends like the Metaverse\, the demand for (hybrid) cloud computing services and edge computing is expected to skyrocket. As recent studies suggest\, new data processing needs are appearing at the edge. This not only for reducing latency but also to ensure data availability and privacy protection.  Running and managing data analytics and AI where it is more efficient and effective is to be supported in the Cloud-Edge-IOT continuum. \nAdvancing the IoT can avoid skyrocketing communication and storage costs\, energy consumption and produce benefits for citizens and businesses thanks to the integration of AI and Machine Learning. \nIn addition\, an open ecosystem built around Open Source and Open Standards is key to unleashing the potential of the European industry in driving green and digital transformation while preserving EU strategic autonomy. Software defined infrastructures based on Open Source and Open Standards will support the next step in the Cloud-Edge-IOT continuum while preventing lock-in and favouring a competitive economy for the benefit of EU citizens. \nThese trends have called for a shift towards the technical and business convergence of the so-far formally separated Cloud\, Edge and IoT domains\, towards an open Cloud\, Edge and IoT Computing Continuum. \nIn the recent years\, the European community of researchers and innovators at work on the next generation Cloud\, Edge and IoT computing has been growing in relevance\, diversity and impact. For Europe to ensure its technological sovereignty and ground the vision of a computing continuum as the backbone of an open and inclusive society\, it is necessary to overcome fragmentation\, bring together organisations and individuals from different communities and leverage Open Source. The Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT meeting is a 2-day physical event organised within the context of the European\, Cloud\, Edge and IoT Continuum initiative by the OpenContinuum consortium in close collaboration with the UNLOCK-CEI and SW Forum projects and guided by the  European Commission DG CNECT E.2 and E.4 Units. \nStructure of the Days\nThe first day of the event will be concertation oriented. The invited Horizon Europe RIAs which started in 2023 will have the opportunity to pitch their projects and introduce the plans for the future\, while the more mature Horizon 2020 projects and the Horizon Europe projects started in 2022 will discuss their assets\, and share lessons learned and success stories. In fact\, it will be an important opportunity for the H2020 projects to further exploit and handover their results to the new RIAs\, who will have a greater picture of the work they can build upon. CSAs such as EU-IoT\, SW Forum and HUB4CLOUD will also demonstrate the accomplishments of the projects they have supported. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking including a cocktail dinner\, and\, in addition\, the EUCloudEdgeIoT Cooperation Mechanisms (task forces) will be discussed. \nThe second day will shift to a consultation\, with the goal to bring forward thinking for the next Horizon Europe Work Programme (2025-2027). Through a Call for Expressions of Interest with new trends\, vision and tracks for research\, it will be selected the best short papers to be presented at the event. The call is open to any interested party\, from academic researchers to industrial players\, funded EC projects\, policy makers and SMEs. Research roadmaps will also be presented by initiatives such as SW Forum\, HiPEAC\, NESSI\, AIOTI\, European Alliance for Industrial Data\, Edge and Cloud\, INSIDE\, FIWARE foundation. \nWhy should you attend?\n\nLearn from and exchange know-how with the major EU funded initiatives and projects on data and computing technologies.\nShowcase and promote your work within the broader European R&I context for further adoption\, exploitation and impact of your project’s outcomes.\nEstablish liaisons and contacts within the European Cloud\, Edge and IoT community to identify common interests and foster synergies and collaborations.\nLearn about industrial best practices/use cases across several industrial sectors where European organisations are playing a significant role.\nLearn about policy/funding plans priorities and help refining the plans to deliver the European Strategy for data grounding the Digital Decade vision.\nBe part of the discussions about future R&I priorities and plans\, help shaping agendas and decisions on future investments.\nContribute to strategic R&I roadmaps to increase the competitiveness of European industry in Europe and ensure EU’s technology independence in Software\, Cloud\, Edge and IoT domains.\nThe event will group the community of major players in Europe engaged in several EU funded projects\, including the ICT-50-2020 (Software Technologies)\, ICT-40-2020 (Cloud Computing)\, ICT-56-2020 (Next Generation IoT)\, HORIZON-CL4-2021-DATA-01-05 (MetaOS)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DATA-01-02 (Cognitive Cloud)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022- DATA-01-03 (Swarm Computing)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01-26 (Open source for cloud-based services). SUMMARY:COMMON TAXONOMY FOR EU METAOS: EUCloudEdgeIot workshop
DESCRIPTION:COMMON TAXONOMY FOR EU METAOS: EUCloudEdgeIot workshop\nThe EUCloudEdgeIoT initiative invites participation in the COMMON TAXONOMY workshop for EU METAOS. This event will gather representatives of EU MetaOS projects to work collaboratively on the development of a common standardised taxonomy for all MetaOs European projects. \nThe workshop will be held online and will last 2 hours. As explained during the EUCloudEdgeIoT.eu launch event (February 8th)\, one of the goals of Task Force 3 (Architecture) is to develop a shared taxonomy for all European projects and initiatives in our field of expertise. \nThe idea is that everyone uses the same words to refer to the same things\, eliminating ambiguities and duplication of terminology and being as specific as possible. EUCloudEdgeIoT will process your inputs and provide the European Union with this commonly agreed taxonomy. \nAs a key specialist in the European Cloud\, Edge & IoT Continuum landscape\, your experience and knowledge will be fundamental in defining the terms that should be included. You will get a final date and agenda ASAP.

SUMMARY:OpenContinuum Webinar: IoT and Edge at Eclipse: Making Sense of the Puzzle
DESCRIPTION:OpenContinuum Webinar: IoT and Edge at Eclipse: Making Sense of the Puzzle\nFrédéric Desbiens manages IoT and Edge Computing programs at the Eclipse Foundation\, Europe’s largest open-source organisation. His job is to help the community innovate by bringing devices and software together. He is a strong supporter of open source. In the past\, he worked as a product manager\, solutions architect\, and developer for companies as diverse as Pivotal\, Cisco\, and Oracle. Frédéric holds an MBA in electronic commerce\, a BASc in Computer Science\, and a BEd\, all from Université Laval (Québec City\, Canada). \nAs of November 2022\, there were over 40 projects in the Eclipse IoT and Edge Native portfolio. Some of them are well-known; some of them are more obscure. Together\, they probably are the most exhaustive toolkit of its kind in the industry. However\, with that many projects\, it is sometimes difficult to figure out which one to pick for a specific use case. The aim of this presentation is to describe the most active Eclipse IoT and Edge projects and position them in a typical IoT architecture. \nFrédéric is the author of “Building Enterprise IoT Solutions using Eclipse IoT Technologies: An Open-Source Approach to Edge Computing\,” published in 2022 by Apress (ISBN: 978-1484288818).

SUMMARY:The European Cloud\, Edge & IoT Continuum – 1st Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The European Cloud\, Edge & IoT Continuum – 1st Webinar\nBackground\nAs recently explained by Max Lemke\, head of the Internet of Things Unit at the European Commission\, It is expected that in the middle of this decade\, most of the data processing and analytics will take place where they are the most efficient\, which is generally close to where the data is generated: at the edge of the network. While today 80% of the processing and analysis of data takes place in data centres and centralised computing facilities and 20% in smart connected objects\, such percentages are foreseen to revert soon. This change calls for a shift from centralised computing facilities to a Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum. \nThe European Union is supporting the evolution of computing continuum along several lines\, including the Chips Act\, Data Legislation\, Data and Cloud Strategy and Research and Innovation Programmes. \nSpecifically among the funded research programmes\, there is the cluster of projects on Meta-Operating Systems for the Next Generation IoT and Edge Computing\, recently presented at the IoT Week 2022 in Dublin. \nUNLOCK CEI is one of the Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) funded in this cluster to understand and predict possible market scenarios at the convergence of Cloud\, Edge and IoT (CEI) technologies and support their adoption by companies and other relevant industrial players. \nTo this aim\, an engaged community of CEI adopters will be constituted to help us understand the requirements for the future uptake of such technologies and provide insights to guide future research and innovation in this field. \nAbout the webinar\nThe first UNLOCK CEI webinar\, part of the EUCloudEdgeIoT.eu initiative\, is the occasion to present the project’s objectives and goals and its interaction with the broader policy context and the other initiatives funded under the same topics. \nThe event also allows the opportunity to meet the people behind the project\, interact with them during a poll session and a panel discussion\, and understand why and how to get involved. \nWho should attend \nThe event is free and open to anyone interested in the cloud\, edge\, and IoT domains and related topics\, including but not limited to Artificial Intelligence\, Interoperability\, ICT security and connectivity. However\, the following professionals are especially invited to participate: \n\nBusiness users: including companies and other industrial players interested in using CEI\, operating in various industrial sectors\, such as manufacturing\, building\, mobility\, energy\, agriculture\nInfrastructure and Tech Providers: including hardware\, chips and device providers\, system integrators and maintainers\, edge and multicloud platforms\, connectivity and open-source projects\nService and Application Providers: embedded intelligence and applications\, computing\, storage\, analytics\, network slices\, orchestrators\, security\nData Management: Intermediators\, Connectors\, Federators\, Pipelines\, Resellers\, Brokers\nFacilitators: including SDOs\, public bodies\, PPPs\, industry associations\, data spaces\nResearch\, Development and Innovation : including R&D Industry Departments\, Research Institutions and Universities\, Research Associations\, Digital Innovation Hubs.\n\nAgenda\n\n15:00 – Introduction\nGolboo Pourabdollahian\, Consulting Manager\, European Government Consulting\, IDC\n15:10 – Why investigating the Cloud-Edge-IoT domain?\nJohn Gole\, Research Director\, European IoT Practice\, IDC\n15:25 – Get involved: value and benefits  \nMarlene Eisenträger\, Consultant\, VDI/VDE IT\n15:40 – Panel Discussion “Understanding Cloud-Edge-IoT: challenges and opportunities”\nModerator: Maria Giuffrida\, Senior Researcher\, Trust-IT\n\n\nKay Bierzynski\, Senior Project Manager\, Infineon and EPoSS\nBrendan Rowan\, Managing Consultant for Tech\, Policy and Skills\, Bluspecs\nNatalie Samovich\, WG Energy Chair\, AIOTI\nAlbert Seubers\, Director\, Martel BV\nRainer Sträter\, SVP Cloud Services and Global Platform Hosting\, IONOS\n\n\n16:20 – Q&A\n16:30 – Conclusion\n\nWatch the Full Recording
