SUMMARY:The future of Cloud and Edge technologies in the EU context: Market insights and sustainability roadmap
DESCRIPTION:Date: 13 November 2024 15:00-16:30CET\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Online\n\nAs cloud and edge technologies become increasingly pivotal for secure data processing and sharing\, Europe’s ability to lead in this domain is essential for economic resilience\, innovation\, and competitiveness. By fostering the development of scalable\, federated\, and secure cloud infrastructures\, emerging initiatives such as the Important Project of Common European Interest on Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS) and the CISERO project aim to position Europe at the forefront of global digital advancements\, ensuring the continent’s leadership in emerging technologies that underpin the Digital Decade policy and overall sustainability goals. \nIn this context\, several actions have been launched. An example is the UNLOCK-CEI project\, one of the CSAs coordinating the EUCloudEdgeIoT initiative\, as it represents a crucial link between the current state of the art of cloud\, edge\, and IoT technologies in the EU’s framework. UNLOCK-CEI recently held its final event\, providing a comprehensive mapping of the state-of-the-art demand & supply of cloud-edge-IoT applications. More recently\, the CISERO project has been launched to support the successful implementation of IPCEI-CIS actions\, facilitating collaboration among EU member states\, industry leaders\, and research organisations. Its mission is to coordinate resources\, provide technical support\, and build a robust business ecosystem to ensure the widespread adoption of cloud and edge computing solutions.  \nThis event aims\, on one side\, to bring insights from the demand market of Cloud-Edge-IoT and\, on the other side\, to investigate how the joint efforts of Member States and industries through IPCEI-CIS projects can create its path towards the market. As a result\, this event will discuss the key results of UNLOCK-CEI\, which are synergistic with CISERO’s goals. These include key trends\, market pathways\, frameworks\, tools\, and methodologies developed throughout the project. Moreover\, considering the strategic role of AI in the CEI ecosystem (from a solutions perspective\, market perspective and ecosystem players’ perspective)\, there will be a panel discussion to focus on specific applications of AI on the computing continuum (in particular\, AI at the edge) where pitches will be provided by the EU-funded projects working on the topic. \nThese outputs will be particularly valuable for CISERO\, offering preliminary recommendations to address the challenges of cloud and edge integration and highlighting key remaining gaps. The legacy of UNLOCK-CEI could serve as a foundational element for creating the CISERO’s sustainability roadmap\, which will support the IPCEI-CIS work in ensuring widespread adoption of next-generation technologies and cloud-to-edge solutions across Europe.\n \n\n\nAgenda\nModerator: Claudio de Majo – Trust-IT Services\, Italy \n15:00 Welcome and webinar introduction \n15:05 Introducing the CISERO project in the IPCEI-CIS context – Matthias Kuom/Sophia Herlmrich DLR Projektträger\, Germany \n15:15 Navigating computing continuum: Demand market insights\, dynamics and opportunities– Golboo Pourabdollahian – IDC\, Italy \n15:35 Panel discussion “Edge AI for Europe’s Cloud and Edge Future” – insights from EU-funded projects \n\nAI REDGIO 5.0\nManolo\nPandora\n\n16:00 Q&A \n16:10 Conclusion \nRegistration available here. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Towards deployment of Cloud-Edge-IoT solutions across the computing continuum from market pathways to large scale pilots
DESCRIPTION:Purpose & Scope of the Event:\nTo realise the green and digital transition\, Europe needs to step up its investments in IoT and connectivity\, facilitate data access and data services across key industrial sectors like automotive\, energy\, buildings\, agriculture etc.\, in particular invest in energy-efficient edge nodes and increase the capacity of its data infrastructure at cloud and at edge level. IoT and edge computing will play a significant role in the future of our businesses\, economy and society\, especially while keeping data at the edge and taking decisions at a local level. This gives us an advantage in global emergencies like the energy crisis\, or natural disasters caused by climate change. Creating this CEI environment—a computing continuum of data collection\, storage and processing from edge to cloud—will be an essential component of a globally competitive\, secure and dynamic data-agile economy in Europe. Europe has the opportunity to shape this technological paradigm and creates its role as a key player in the worldwide CEI ecosystem and further progress towards digital autonomy and economic resiliency. \nTo seize the opportunity\, it is crucial to tackle central open points for the edge paradigm shift. While\, on one hand\, collaborative work is needed in terms of a common CEI reference architecture\, identification of relevant open-source building blocks and common use of an edge taxonomy\, there is also the crucial need to fully understand the needs and requirements of European industrial adopters\, the evolution of a European CEI ecosystem and industrial market trends to ensure the alignment of technological solutions with the economic opportunities. The formation of an integrated European CEI value chain where there is an established dialogue among the key stakeholders (technology providers\, infrastructure providers\, system integrators\, end-users\, etc.) is an important step to facilitate this edge paradigm shift. This should be aligned with advancements in Europe in terms of design principles for Data Spaces\, legal data frameworks such as AI act\, Digital Governance Act and/or the Data act\, and strategic initiatives such as Chips JU (including KDT and EPOSS). \nThe event dove into sectoral applications and use cases which have been showcased by industrial partners in the CEI cluster\, highlight industrial success stories originated from the Meta-OS projects\, which are well embedded into the final project results\, the value chain analysis behind key edge application and services and impact assessment made\, which is impactful and synergistic efforts as well as the success stories of Meta-OS projects paving the way towards Large scale pilots supported under the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2024. SUMMARY:Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT
DESCRIPTION:Scope of the Event\nThe blurring barriers between Cloud and Edge computing are giving birth to a computing continuum where services and data must be managed and secured efficiently. Especially with new trends like the Metaverse\, the demand for (hybrid) cloud computing services and edge computing is expected to skyrocket. As recent studies suggest\, new data processing needs are appearing at the edge. This not only for reducing latency but also to ensure data availability and privacy protection.  Running and managing data analytics and AI where it is more efficient and effective is to be supported in the Cloud-Edge-IOT continuum. \nAdvancing the IoT can avoid skyrocketing communication and storage costs\, energy consumption and produce benefits for citizens and businesses thanks to the integration of AI and Machine Learning. \nIn addition\, an open ecosystem built around Open Source and Open Standards is key to unleashing the potential of the European industry in driving green and digital transformation while preserving EU strategic autonomy. Software defined infrastructures based on Open Source and Open Standards will support the next step in the Cloud-Edge-IOT continuum while preventing lock-in and favouring a competitive economy for the benefit of EU citizens. \nThese trends have called for a shift towards the technical and business convergence of the so-far formally separated Cloud\, Edge and IoT domains\, towards an open Cloud\, Edge and IoT Computing Continuum. \nIn the recent years\, the European community of researchers and innovators at work on the next generation Cloud\, Edge and IoT computing has been growing in relevance\, diversity and impact. For Europe to ensure its technological sovereignty and ground the vision of a computing continuum as the backbone of an open and inclusive society\, it is necessary to overcome fragmentation\, bring together organisations and individuals from different communities and leverage Open Source. The Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT meeting is a 2-day physical event organised within the context of the European\, Cloud\, Edge and IoT Continuum initiative by the OpenContinuum consortium in close collaboration with the UNLOCK-CEI and SW Forum projects and guided by the  European Commission DG CNECT E.2 and E.4 Units. \nStructure of the Days\nThe first day of the event will be concertation oriented. The invited Horizon Europe RIAs which started in 2023 will have the opportunity to pitch their projects and introduce the plans for the future\, while the more mature Horizon 2020 projects and the Horizon Europe projects started in 2022 will discuss their assets\, and share lessons learned and success stories. In fact\, it will be an important opportunity for the H2020 projects to further exploit and handover their results to the new RIAs\, who will have a greater picture of the work they can build upon. CSAs such as EU-IoT\, SW Forum and HUB4CLOUD will also demonstrate the accomplishments of the projects they have supported. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking including a cocktail dinner\, and\, in addition\, the EUCloudEdgeIoT Cooperation Mechanisms (task forces) will be discussed. \nThe second day will shift to a consultation\, with the goal to bring forward thinking for the next Horizon Europe Work Programme (2025-2027). Through a Call for Expressions of Interest with new trends\, vision and tracks for research\, it will be selected the best short papers to be presented at the event. The call is open to any interested party\, from academic researchers to industrial players\, funded EC projects\, policy makers and SMEs. Research roadmaps will also be presented by initiatives such as SW Forum\, HiPEAC\, NESSI\, AIOTI\, European Alliance for Industrial Data\, Edge and Cloud\, INSIDE\, FIWARE foundation. \nWhy should you attend?\n\nLearn from and exchange know-how with the major EU funded initiatives and projects on data and computing technologies.\nShowcase and promote your work within the broader European R&I context for further adoption\, exploitation and impact of your project’s outcomes.\nEstablish liaisons and contacts within the European Cloud\, Edge and IoT community to identify common interests and foster synergies and collaborations.\nLearn about industrial best practices/use cases across several industrial sectors where European organisations are playing a significant role.\nLearn about policy/funding plans priorities and help refining the plans to deliver the European Strategy for data grounding the Digital Decade vision.\nBe part of the discussions about future R&I priorities and plans\, help shaping agendas and decisions on future investments.\nContribute to strategic R&I roadmaps to increase the competitiveness of European industry in Europe and ensure EU’s technology independence in Software\, Cloud\, Edge and IoT domains.\nThe event will group the community of major players in Europe engaged in several EU funded projects\, including the ICT-50-2020 (Software Technologies)\, ICT-40-2020 (Cloud Computing)\, ICT-56-2020 (Next Generation IoT)\, HORIZON-CL4-2021-DATA-01-05 (MetaOS)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DATA-01-02 (Cognitive Cloud)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022- DATA-01-03 (Swarm Computing)\, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01-26 (Open source for cloud-based services).
